Quick answer

Why does my shower drip when it is off, or run too hot or too cold?

Almost always the cartridge or stem set inside the valve. The rubber seals wear, hard-water scale builds up, and the valve either seeps past the seals or stops mixing hot and cold correctly. In most cases the cartridge comes out through the trim and is replaced without opening the wall. Sonlight identifies the valve, replaces the worn part, and tests the shower before leaving.

  • Water comes out of the tub spout and the showerhead at the same time
  • The temperature swings, or you cannot get it hot enough no matter where the handle sits
  • Water appears on the floor below the tub, or at the ceiling of the room underneath, when the tub drains
  • The trim is pitted or loose and the wall behind it is wet

Scope

Cartridge versus valve body: what changes the job

Most shower and tub problems are solved at the cartridge or stem set, which comes out through the trim with the wall closed. A valve body only needs replacing when it is cracked, corroded through, or no longer available in parts. Replacing the body means soldering or fitting a new valve into the supply lines behind the wall, so Sonlight does that work through an accessible rear panel, an existing access door, or an open wall.

Where there is no access, the written scope states where an access opening would be made and that Sonlight does not patch drywall, tile, or surrounds; that finish work is lined up separately. Nothing is opened until the scope is approved.

Customer-supplied valves and trim

You are welcome to supply the valve, trim kit, or showerhead. Sonlight checks that the trim matches the valve body in the wall before the visit when you can send a photo, installs it, and stands behind the plumbing connections; the fixture itself is covered by the manufacturer's warranty between you and the manufacturer. Our customer-supplied fixtures guide explains what to check before you buy.

Remodels

A new tub or shower with a valve rough-in, new supply lines, and new trim is remodel plumbing, scoped as its own written estimate the same way repiping and remodel plumbing is.
