Quick answer

Do I need a plumber to install a water softener or a reverse osmosis system?

The equipment is only part of the job. A softener ties into the home's main water line through a loop with a bypass, and a reverse osmosis system needs a supply connection, a drain connection, and a dedicated faucet. Those connections are where leaks and slow drips start. Sonlight makes the connections, tests them under pressure, and confirms the system is running before leaving.

When water treatment work comes up

  • Scale on faucets, showerheads, and the inside of the kettle, or a water heater that needs frequent flushing
  • Spots on dishes and glassware and soap that will not lather
  • A taste or odor in the drinking water that a pitcher filter is not keeping up with
  • An existing softener that is bypassed, leaking at the bypass valve, or no longer regenerating
  • A reverse osmosis faucet that has slowed to a trickle, or a storage tank that never fills
  • Filter cartridges that are overdue and a housing you would rather not open yourself

The plumbing Sonlight handles

  • Reverse osmosis drinking-water system installation, company-supplied or customer-supplied
  • Under-sink drinking-water filter installation
  • Whole-house cartridge filter installation on an accessible main water line
  • Water softener installation or replacement on an existing softener loop
  • Softener bypass valve service when the bypass leaks or will not turn
  • Whole-house filter cartridge replacement
  • Leak testing of every connection Sonlight makes

Scope

What the written scope covers before anything is approved

A softener goes on a softener loop: the section of main line, usually in the garage or utility area, that lets the softened water feed the house while the bypass keeps hose bibbs and irrigation on raw water. Sonlight installs and replaces softeners on an existing loop. If the home has no loop, adding one is pipe work on the main line and is quoted separately as a written estimate from the house itself, so you know what is involved before you buy equipment.

A reverse osmosis system needs a cold-water supply connection, a drain connection with an air gap or approved drain fitting, a storage tank, and a dedicated faucet at the sink. Sonlight makes those connections and confirms the system fills and dispenses before leaving. The number of filter stages and the membrane are a product decision; the connections are the plumbing.

Some Tri-Cities jurisdictions require a plumbing permit for a water softener installation. Sonlight confirms the permitting jurisdiction for the address, and the written scope states permit responsibility and any permit cost before approval. The Tri-Cities plumbing permits guide explains how the jurisdictions differ.

Hard water in the Tri-Cities

Hardness varies by city and by water source, and some utilities publish a range rather than one number. Sonlight tests hardness at the house when sizing treatment instead of assuming one figure for the whole area. The hard water guide covers what the minerals do to water heaters, faucets, and fixtures, and when a softener is worth considering. If a softener's salt tank is overfilling, see water softener overflowing.

Customer-supplied equipment

You are welcome to supply the softener, filter, or reverse osmosis system. Sonlight makes the plumbing connections and stands behind that plumbing work; the equipment itself is covered by the manufacturer's warranty between you and the manufacturer, not by a Sonlight product warranty. Our customer-supplied fixtures guide explains what to check before you buy.
